چکیده

In this chapter of the special issue of the journal ”Transport in Porous Media”, on the topic ”Flow and transport above permeable domains”, we present modeling of flow and transport above permeable domains using the homogenization method. Our goal is to develop a heuristic approach which can be used by the engineering community for treating this type of problems and which has a solid mathematical background. The rigorous mathematical justification, of the presented results, is given in the corresponding articles of the authors. The plan is as follows: We start with the Introduction were we give an overview and comparison with interface conditions obtained using other approaches. In Section 2, we give a very short derivation of the Darcy law by homogenization, using the two-scale expansion in the typical pore size parameter ε. It gives us the definition of various auxiliary functions and typical effective properties as permeability. In Section 3, we introduce our approach to the effective interface laws on a simple 1D example. The approximation is obtained heuristically using the two steps strategy. For the 1D problem we calculate the approximation and the effective interface law explicitly and show that it is valid at order O(ε). Next, in Section 4 we give a derivation of the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition and of the pressure jump condition, using homogenization. We construct the corresponding boundary layer and present a heuristic calculation, leading to the interface law and being based on the rigorous mathematical result. In addition, we show the invariance ∗The research of A.M. was partially supported by the GDR MOMAS (Modélisation Mathématique et Simulations numériques liées aux problèmes de gestion des déchets nucléaires) (PACEN/CNRS, ANDRA, BRGM, CEA, EDF, IRSN).

Effective Pressure Interface Law for Transport Phenomena between an Unconfined Fluid and a Porous Medium Using Homogenization

We present modeling of the incompressible viscous flows in the domain containing unconfined fluid and a porous medium in the case when the flow in the unconfined domain dominates. For such setting a rigorous derivation of the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition was undertaken by Jäger and Mikelić [SIAM J. Appl. Math. 60 (2000), p.1111-1127] using the homogenization method. So far the int...

A Nonlinear Effective Slip Interface Law for Transport Phenomena between a Fracture Flow and a Porous Medium

We present modeling of an incompressible viscous flow through a fracture adjacent to a porous medium. A fast stationary flow, predominantly tangential to the porous medium is considered. Slow flow in such setting can be described by the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman slip. For fast flows, a nonlinear filtration law in the porous medium and a nonlinear interface law are expected. In this paper we rigoro...

A framework for computing effective boundary conditions at the interface between free fluid and a porous medium

Interfacial boundary conditions determined from empirical or ad hoc models remain the standard approach to model fluid flows over porous media, even in situations where the topology of the porous medium is known. We propose a non-empirical and accurate method to compute the effective boundary conditions at the interface between a porous surface and an overlying flow. Using a multiscale expansio...

Lecture 2 Homogenization in Porous Media

The goal of this lecture is to show that homogenization is a very efficient tool in the modeling of complex phenomena in heterogeneous media. In the first lecture we considered a model problem of diffusion for which the homogenized operator was of the same type (still a diffusion equation). In this context, homogenization is really a matter of defining and computing effective diffusion tensors....

MHD thermal radiation and chemical reaction effects with peristaltic transport of the eyring-powell fluid through a porous medium

In this paper, we analyze the thermal radiation and chemical reaction impacts on MHD peristaltic motion of the Eyring-Powell fluid through a porous medium in a channel with compliant walls under slip conditions for velocity, temperature, and concentration. Assumptions of a long wave length and low Reynolds number are considered. The modeled equations are computed by using the perturbation metho...
